Before you head out on your next adventure, take a minute to dial it in. Here's how to fine-tune your harness so your dog can move naturally and feel great doing it.
Start by adjusting the neck straps. Make sure the front ring rests comfortably on your dog’s chest, not pressing into the trachea (windpipe).
Then, adjust the body straps so the harness isn’t too loose but still gives your pup room to move. The straps should sit just above the armpits and run straight down.
⚠️ Common Harness Adjustment Mistakes
1. Too loose around the chest
If the chest strap sags or shifts side to side, the harness won’t stay in place, and your dog may slip out. The chest strap should sit snugly behind the front legs, without pinching.
2. Neck straps too tight
Over-tightening near the neck can restrict movement or put pressure on the throat. You should be able to fit two fingers between the strap and your dog’s body – comfortably, not forcefully.
3. Uneven adjustments
If the left and right sides aren’t balanced, the harness may twist during walks. Always check both sides for symmetry, especially after washing or long use.
4. Belly strap riding too far forward
When the belly strap sits too close to the ribs or front legs, it can rub or shift. It should land comfortably under the chest, with room to move but not to slip.
5. Ignoring body shape
Dogs come in all shapes. Deep chests, broad shoulders, short legs – always adjust based on your dog’s actual fit, not just the size label.
Now your pup is all set for comfy, stress-free walks!
